Handan County, formerly a county under the jurisdiction of Handan City, Hebei Province, is surrounded by the suburbs of Handan City, bordering Yongnian County and Feixiang County in the east (now divided into districts), Cixian County and Cheng'an County in the south, and Yongnian County (now Yongnian District) in the north, with a total area of 279.87 square kilometers. It is located in the south of North China Plain, at the eastern foot of Taihang Mountains at the southern end of Hebei Province, and at the junction of Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces.

Handan County belongs to the cold temperate continental monsoon climate, which is the second temperate zone in Hebei Province. In 2014, Handan County had a total population of 300000, and its residents were mainly Han people, including 17 ethnic minorities such as Hui, Manchu, Zhuang, Mongolian, Tujia, Miao, Buyi, Yi, Li, Dong, Korean, Lisu, Gaoshan, Tibetan, Bai, Shui, Xibo, etc. The main scenic spots in Handan County include Ancient Stone Dragon, Yueai Temple, Guangji Palace, Shengjinggang, Lvzu Tomb, Purple Mountain, Jiulong Lake, etc.

In 2015, the total financial revenue of Handan County was 1389.45 million yuan, accounting for 101.2% of the annual plan, with an over revenue of 16.49 million yuan, a comparable increase of 12.8%. The budgetary revenue of the public finance was 606.15 million yuan, accounting for 100% of the annual plan. The overcharge was 90000 yuan, a comparable increase of 12.1%.

On September 30, 2016, the State Council agreed to revoke Handan County. The areas under the original jurisdiction of Handan County were divided into Handan District and Congtai District, and Handan County has been abolished.
