Hezuo City, subordinate to Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province, is located at the northeast edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, at the junction of Gansu, Qinghai and Sichuan provinces, bordering Zhuoni County in the east, Luqu County in the south, Xiahe County in the west, and Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture Hezheng County and Linxia County in the north. National Highway 213 and Provincial Highway 306 pass through the city, which is the main transportation route from the mainland to Qinghai and Tibet. It is 226 kilometers away from the provincial capital Lanzhou. It is the seat of the capital of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and also the political, economic, cultural, technological and financial center of the whole prefecture. Hezuo is transliterated as "Heicuo" in Tibetan, which means the place where antelope live. Hezuo Town was established in 1956, under the jurisdiction of Xiahe County. The cooperative city was established with the approval of the State Council in May 1996. It was prepared in 1997 and officially put into operation on January 1, 1998. The city now governs 6 townships (3 towns and 3 townships) and 4 streets, 39 villagers committees, 8 communities and 249 villagers' groups. At the end of 2019, the registered residence population of the cooperative city was 93727. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Hezuo City was 112173.
The total land area of the city is 2670 square kilometers, including 2.61 million mu of animal husbandry land, 153600 mu of agricultural land and 778700 mu of forestry land. The new urban planning area is 17.10 square kilometers, and the built-up area is 8.68 square kilometers. The average altitude of the area is 2960 meters, the average annual temperature is 1.7 ℃, and there is no absolute frost-free period.
On September 29, 2018, the People's Government of Gansu Province approved the cooperative city to withdraw from the poverty-stricken counties.
