Kuitun belongs to the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. It is located in the middle of the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, in the southwest of the Junggar Basin, bordering Shawan County of Tacheng Prefecture in the east, Wusu City of Tacheng Prefecture in the west, Huyanghe City and Karamay District of Karamay City in the north, and Dushanzi District of Karamay City in the south. The city has jurisdiction over 6 streets, 1 township, national Kuitun-Dushanzi Economic and Technological Development Zone - Tianbei New Area, with an administrative area of 909.48 square kilometers. The city name means "cold" in Heshute Mongolian.
