Lanxian County, subordinate to Luliang City, Shanxi Province, is located in the west of the central part of Shanxi Province, north of Luliang, south of Xinzhou, adjacent to Taiyuan, east of Jingle, south of Loufan and Fangshan, west of Xingxian County, north of Kelan. Lanxian County has a high altitude and flat terrain, which is known as "the cloud in the sky". Lanxian County has a temperate continental monsoon climate, which is cold and cool. The highest altitude in the county is 2275m, and the lowest altitude is 1154m. The total land area of the county is 1512 square kilometers, accounting for 0.97% of the total area of the province and 7.2% of the total area of Luliang City. According to the data of the seventh census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Lanxian County is 148315.

There are more than 20 kinds of proven mineral resources with mining value in Lanxian County, including coal, iron, manganese, marble and granite, especially coal and iron. In September 2018, at the 16th China International Cereals and Oils Products and Equipment Technology Exhibition and Trade Fair, Lanxian County was awarded the title of "Home of Potatoes (Food) in China". On April 18, 2019, the People's Government of Shanxi Province approved Lan County to withdraw from poverty-stricken counties. On January 22, 2020, it was named National Garden County by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development.
