Mayang Autonomous County, subordinate to Huaihua City of Hunan Province, is located in the west of Hunan Province and the north of Huaihua City. It is connected with Chenxi County on the east, Hecheng District and Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County on the south, Bijiang District of Tongren City of Guizhou Province on the west, and Fenghuang County and Luxi County of Xiangxi Tujia and Autonomous Prefecture on the north. The county covers an area of 1568.19 square kilometers and has jurisdiction over 10 townships and 8 towns. As of November 2020, the permanent population of Mayang Autonomous County was 313,300.

Mayang Autonomous County is located between Wuling Mountains and Xuefeng Mountains, belonging to the Yuanma Basin, which is trending from southwest to northeast. From generation to generation, Miao, Han, Tujia, Dong, Yao and other brother ethnic groups have lived, among which the Miao nationality is the main one.
