Mingxi County, located in Guihua County in the sixth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (1470), is under the jurisdiction of Fujian Provincial Government. It was renamed Mingxi County in 1933, and was under the jurisdiction of Sanming City since 1983. It is located in the middle of Sanming City, at the southeast foot of Wuyi Mountains, and borders with 9 counties (cities, districts) of Sanming City. The total area of the county is 1730 square kilometers, and it governs 4 towns, 5 townships, and 96 villages (residences). According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Mingxi County was 98930.

Mingxi is a key old revolutionary base county and a key county for poverty alleviation and development at the provincial level. During the Second Civil Revolutionary War, it was one of the 21 base counties in the Central Soviet Area, and there were 76 administrative villages (houses) in the old revolutionary base area.

Mingxi is a traditional Hakka residence. After the liberation of the People's Republic of China, it has accepted national and provincial immigrants for many times, with a relative immigration population of more than 50%. The county has 13200 people going abroad, accounting for about 11% of the total population of the county. It is mainly distributed in more than 50 countries and regions, most of which are concentrated in Italy, Hungary, Russia and other countries, with about 50000 family members of overseas Chinese. It has become a veritable "Fujian's first county in Europe" and "the new inland hometown of overseas Chinese in Haixi". In April 2020, it will meet the conditions for poverty alleviation and exit from the provincial key counties for poverty alleviation and development.

The traffic in Mingxi County is convenient, with G72 Quanzhou Nanning Expressway and 534 National Highway passing through.
