Ningxiang City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Changsha City in Hunan Province, is located in the south margin of Dongting Lake to the north of the east of Hunan and in the west of Changsha City, with a total area of 2906 square kilometers between 111°53 '-112°46' east longitude and 27°55 '-28°29' north latitude. Ningxiang City belongs to the transition from the central subtropical to the north subtropical continental monsoon humid climate, four distinct seasons, cold period is short, hot period is long. As of April 2020, Ningxiang Municipality has jurisdiction over 4 streets, 21 towns and 4 townships. The municipal People's government is located at No. 398, Section 5, Jinzhou Avenue, Yutan Street. According to the seventh census, the permanent population of Ningxiang was 1,263,332 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.

In October 2021, it was selected into the "2021 Top 100 Counties and Cities of China Smart Cities" list.
