Pingtang County, under the Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, is adjacent to Dushan County on the east, Nandan County of Guangxi on the south, Huishui County and Luodian County on the west, and Duyun County and Duyun City on the north. It is 710 meters above sea level, 36 kilometers away from Dushan, 66 kilometers away from Duyun, 122 kilometers away from Luodian, 193 kilometers away from Guiyang, 35 kilometers away from Guixin Expressway. The longitude and latitude are 106°40'29" ~ 107º26'19" east, 25°29'55" ~ 26°06'41" north. It covers an area of 2,806 square kilometers. By 2022, Pingtang County administrative region is divided into: 9 towns, 1 township and 1 street, the county people's government in Pinghu Town. According to the seventh census, the permanent population of Pingtang County was 234,417 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.

Pingtang County is located in the southern mountain of southern Guizhou, high in the north and low in the south. The average annual temperature is 16.7℃ and the annual precipitation is 1217 mm. River belongs to the Pearl River system, the main rivers are Pingzhou River, Caodu River. Mineral deposits have coal, iron, marble, ceramic soil and so on. The forest coverage rate is 52%. 312 provincial highway runs through the border. There are Pingzhou River Valley Scenic spot, Jiacha Scenic spot, Longtang Scenic Spot, Kedu Cave Group, the 500-meter aperture spherical Radio telescope known as the "Eye of Heaven in China" and other scenic spots.

In September 2018, Pingtang County was awarded the honorary title of "2018 E-commerce into Rural Comprehensive Demonstration County" by the Ministry of Commerce. In March 2020, the People's Government of Guizhou Province agreed to remove Pingtang County from the poverty-stricken county list. In 2020, the GDP of Pingtang County was 9.25 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 4.4 percent.
