Qamdo County (Qamdo County) generally refers to Karuo District
Karo District, under the jurisdiction of Qamdo City of Tibet Autonomous Region, is located in eastern Tibet, in the Hengduan Mountains and three rivers (Jinsha River, Lancang River, Nu River) valley, Qamdo Tibetan means "the junction of water". It borders Sichuan Province on the east, Myanmar and Yunnan on the southeast, Nyingchi City on the southwest, Nagqu City of Tibet on the northwest, Qinghai Province on the north, and Lhasa, the capital of the autonomous region, on the west. The total area is 10,800 square kilometers. According to the 7th census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Karuo District was 148,511.
Since the late Qing Dynasty, Karo District has been the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of Qamdo City, known as the "Gateway to Tibet". In November 2014, The State Council issued a reply allowing the Tibet Autonomous Region to revoke the establishment of prefecture-level Qamdo City in Qamdo Prefecture, abolish the region and Qamdo County, and set up prefecture-level Qamdo City. Kaluo District is set up in Qamdo City, taking the former administrative area of Qamdo County as the administrative area of Kaluo District of Qamdo City, and the people's government of Kaluo District is stationed at 259 Middle Changdu Road, Chengguan Town.
In 2019, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Karuo District reached 7.151 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 8.4%. The per capita disposable income of urban residents reached 36,781 yuan, up 10.1 percent year on year; The per capita disposable income of rural residents reached 12,536 yuan, up 13 percent year on year. Total retail sales of consumer goods reached 2.449 billion yuan, up 10.5% year on year. Social investment in fixed assets reached 4.6 billion yuan, up 15 percent year on year. Revenue from local governments' general public budgets totaled 228 million yuan.
In October 2017, Karuo District passed the national special evaluation and inspection, and was officially approved by the People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region to withdraw from the poverty-stricken county. On October 22, 2018, it was selected into the list of leading areas for the integrated development of primary, secondary and tertiary industries in the country in 2018.
