Shitai County, subordinate to Chizhou City of Anhui Province, is located in the south of Anhui Province and the west of the mountainous areas of southern Anhui Province. Its geographical coordinates are between 29°59 '-- 30°24' north latitude and 117°12 '-- 117°59' east longitude, bordering Huangshan District in the east, Yi County and Qimen County of Huangshan City in the south, bordering East Zhi County in the west, and adjacent to Guichi District and Qingyang County in the north. The total area is 1,413 square kilometers. By the end of 2020, Shitai County has jurisdiction over 6 towns and 2 townships. The people's government of the county is based in Renli Town. The resident population of the county is 80,612.

Shitai since the Nanliang period (AD 536) county, has a history of nearly 1500 years. In 1959, due to the construction of Chencun reservoir (Taiping Lake) abolished the establishment. In 1965, due to the need for national defense construction, it was rebuilt and renamed Shitai. It has a large number of cultural relics and historic sites, such as the ancient Great Wall built during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the Ancient Hui Road of Bugen Pass, a national key cultural relic protection unit, and the ruins of Shanshan Zhen Guosi in the Tang Dynasty.
