Tacheng City, belonging to the Tacheng region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the northwest border of China, at the northern edge of the Thar Basin, the southern slope of the Tarbahatai Mountains, the northern bank of the Emin River, and borders Kazakhstan in the west and north. Its administrative area is 4356 square kilometers, 530 kilometers from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. Tacheng has been one of the strategic places to guard the western Xinjiang since ancient times. Today, the urban area has been the headquarters of the Taerbahatai Counsellor's Office, the Tacheng Zhili Office, the Tacheng Road, the Tacheng Commissioner's Office, the Tacheng Administrative Office, the Tacheng Municipal Committee and the municipal government for more than 200 years since the 29th year of Qianlong (1764). On December 15, 2020, the State Council approved the establishment of the Tacheng Key Development and Opening Pilot Zone in Xinjiang.
