Tacheng City, belonging to the Tacheng region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the northwest border of China, at the northern edge of the Thar Basin, the southern slope of the Tarbahatai Mountains, the northern bank of the Emin River, and borders Kazakhstan in the west and north. Its administrative area is 4356 square kilometers, 530 kilometers from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Tacheng City was 158100.

Tacheng has been one of the strategic places to guard the western Xinjiang since ancient times. Today, the urban area has been the headquarters of the Taerbahatai Counsellor's Office, the Tacheng Zhili Office, the Tacheng Road, the Tacheng Commissioner's Office, the Tacheng Administrative Office, the Tacheng Municipal Committee and the municipal government for more than 200 years since the 29th year of Qianlong (1764). The territory is crisscrossed by rivers and lakes, and the customs, clothing, food and other cultures of many nationalities are blended together to form "the unique diversified folk customs of Tacheng", which is known as the museum of Xinjiang folk customs.

As of October 2021, Tacheng City has jurisdiction over 3 streets, 3 towns and 4 townships; It also has jurisdiction over three corps and one economic development zone. In 2019, Tacheng's GDP was 9015 million yuan, the added value of the primary industry was 2460 million yuan, the added value of the secondary industry was 1413 million yuan, the general public budget revenue was 457 million yuan, and the general public budget expenditure was 2461 million yuan. On December 15, 2020, the State Council approved the establishment of the Tacheng Key Development and Opening Pilot Zone in Xinjiang.
