Tongjiang, a county-level city in Heilongjiang Province, is administered by Jiamusi City. Tongjiang is located on the south bank of the confluence of Songhua River and Heilongjiang River in the northeast of Heilongjiang Province. It borders Fuyuan in the east, Fujin City and Raohe County in the south, Songhua River and Suibin County in the west, and Russia Jewish Autonomous Prefecture across Heilongjiang Province in the north. The border line is 170 kilometers long. With a total area of 6300 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 6 towns, 2 townships, 2 ethnic townships and 6 state farms. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, Tongjiang's permanent population was 176,112.

Tongjiang City is one of the "six small" ethnic groups in China, the main settlement of the Hezhe nationality, which runs through China's North-South highway "Tongsan" the starting point of the north. Within the territory of Bacha Island and Honghe two national nature reserves and a Jiejin Mountain national forest park. There is also a national class of port - Tongjiang port.

In November 2015, it was listed in the second batch of national comprehensive pilot areas for new urbanization. In December 2017, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission named the fifth batch of national demonstration zones for ethnic unity and progress. On May 5, 2019, the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province approved Tongjiang to be removed from the poverty-stricken county list. In 2019, it was listed as the second batch of national agricultural product quality safety county. In November 2019, it was selected into the list of the second batch of counties (districts) that reached the standard of water-saving social construction. In November 2022, The State Council approved the establishment of a cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone in Tongjiang City.

In 2020, the GDP of Tongjiang was 11,09412 million yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 2.3% based on comparable prices.
