Wutai County is located in the northeast of Shanxi Province, belongs to Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, is a rock and soil mountain, east of Hebei Province with Taihang ridge as the boundary, an area of 2865 square kilometers, jurisdiction over 5 towns, 11 townships, 1 Tuoliang scenic spot, 495 administrative villages. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Wutai County was 216,178. From January to November 2020, the GDP of Wutai County reached 3.57 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of -0.9%.

Wutai Mountain in Wutai County, overlapping mountains, complex terrain, east, by east, west, middle, south, north, five Taiwan, known as the "roof of North China". It ranks first among the four famous Buddhist mountains in China.
Wutai County is located in the north, with high terrain and cold climate, known as the "small Xing 'an Mountain in North China". The average annual temperature is 5℃, minus 11℃ in January and 21℃ in July. Annual rainfall of 500 mm, frost-free period 90-150 days.

On January 22, 2020, it was named the National garden County by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. On February 27, 2020, with the approval of Shanxi Provincial government, Wutai County was removed from the impoverished county.
