Yuanjiang is a county - level city in Hunan Province, administered by Yiyang City. Located in the northeast of Hunan Province, Dongting Lake shore, in 522 AD county (called Yaoshan County), in October 1988 county changed into a city. The city has rolling hills in the southwest, alluvial plain in the north and Luang marshes in the southeast, showing the landform features of "three dike fields, three continents, three water areas and one hill". The city has a pleasant climate, abundant specialties and convenient transportation. It enjoys the reputation of "Pearl of Dongting" and "Treasure land of Jiangnan". In 2012, Yuanjiang Municipality had jurisdiction over 2 subdistricts, 11 towns, 1 township and 2 farms. In 2015, according to the Yuanjiang town zoning adjustment plan, 2 subdistricts and 11 towns were under its jurisdiction after the adjustment. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on 1 November 2020, the Yuanjiang permanent population was 567,159.
Yuanjiang is an important producing area for commodity grain, cotton, pig and orange in China and an advanced city for plain greening. At the same time, it is also rich in a variety of agricultural products such as snakehead, turtle, loach, eel, Hunan lotus, yellow flower, snake and so on. It is an important export base of agricultural and sideline products in Hunan Province. The total area of the city is 2019.7 square kilometers. Yuanjiang is the pioneer county of plain greening in China. It has the largest wetland protection area in Asia and the scenic belt of Baili orange Garden. It is the first ecological tourism city announced by the state. In 2020, the gross regional product (GDP) of Yuanjiang reached 27.03 billion yuan, an increase of 3.5% over the previous year.
On January 29, 2021, it was selected into the list of regions with remarkable achievements in 2020 published by Hunan Provincial People's Government.
