Yuyao, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province and administered by Ningbo City, is located in Ningshao Plain in eastern Zhejiang Province. It is adjacent to Jiangbei District and Haishu District in the east, Siming Mountain in the south, Fenghua District and Shengzhou City in the west, Shangyu District in the north, Cixi City in the north, and Haiyan County in the northwest along the Central Line of Hangzhou Bay of Qiantang River. The total area is 1500.8 square kilometers. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Yuyao was 1,254,032.
Yuyao is the birthplace of the Yaojiang School and the hometown of Wang Shouren, Huang Zongxi, Jiang Menglin and Shen Junshan. Ningbo Hemudu Site is a national cultural relic protection unit. In June 2017, Yuyao was named a National Health City. In November 2017, it was awarded National Civilized City. In October 2018, it was selected as one of the top 100 counties and cities for green development, one of the top 100 counties and cities for scientific and technological innovation, and one of the top 100 counties and cities for new urbanization quality. In December 2020, Yuyao ranked 16th in the "Top 100 Comprehensive Economic Competitiveness of Counties in China" released by the Academy of Social Sciences.
In 2021, Yuyao achieved a regional GDP of 144.15 billion yuan, an increase of 9.1% based on comparable prices.
