Zhangping (formerly located in Zhangping County, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Ningyang County), which means "living in the upper reaches of Zhangshui River and in the middle of thousands of mountains, this place is flat", is located in the southwest of Fujian Province, at the upstream of Jiulong River (Beixi), between 24 ° 54 '- 25 ° 47' N, 117 ° 11 '- 117 ° 44' E, and is located at the east gate of western Fujian, bordering Yongchun and Anxi in the east, Hua'an and Nanjing in the south, Xinluo District in the west, Yong'an and Datian in the north, It is externally connected to Xiamen and other developed coastal areas in southern Fujian, and internally connected to the hinterland of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi. The total area of the jurisdiction is 2975 square kilometers.

Zhangping was established as a county in the seventh year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (1471), and was withdrawn from the county and established as a city in 1990. Zhangzhou dialect and Zhangping dialect are commonly used in the southern Fujian dialect (some areas, such as Xinqiao in Xinan, are close to Quanzhou, which are called Quanqiang).

In March 2019, Zhangping was listed as the first batch of counties and districts for the protection and utilization of revolutionary cultural relics.
