Zhaodong City is a county - level city under the jurisdiction of Suihua City. It is located in the middle of Songnen Plain in the southwest of Heilongjiang Province, between 125°22 'to 126°22' east longitude and 45°10 'to 46°20' north latitude. It is 53 kilometers away from Harbin in the south and 74 kilometers away from Daqing in the north, with a total area of 4332 square kilometers. It has 4 urban offices and 33 community committees. There are 22 towns (offices) and 186 administrative villages in the countryside. According to the seventh census data, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Zhaodong city was 666,532.

Zhaodong City is located in China's rare "cold black soil" green agricultural area. It is a cold temperate climate with an average accumulated temperature of 2772℃. Zhaodong is an important node city in the economic belt of Harbin, Daqing and Qiqihar. It is located in the central axis of the industrial corridor of Harbin and Daqi. It is an important station of the passenger line of Hazi-Qi. In June 2020, it was selected into the county new-type urbanization construction demonstration list.

In 2019, the gross domestic product of Zhaodong was 20.93 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6% over the previous year. The value added of the primary industry was 8.96 billion yuan, that of the secondary industry was 2.58 billion yuan and that of the tertiary industry was 9.39 billion yuan, up by 0.8%, 4.3% and 6.4%, respectively, over the same period last year. Per capita GDP was 24,508 yuan, an increase of 7.0 percent over the previous year. The industrial structure was further rationalized, and the ratio of three industries was adjusted from 22.6:37.6:39.8 in 2018 to 42.8:12.3:44.9.
