Zhenyuan County is a part of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, 96 kilometers away from Kaili City, the state capital, located in Wuling Mountain Area in the east of Guizhou Province. It is a slope zone between Guizhou Plateau and Xiangxi Hills. It borders Xinhuang in Hunan Province to the east, Sansui and Jianhe in the south, Pishibing in the west, and Cengong and Shiqian in Tongren City to the north. It is a subtropical humid climate zone, with an average annual temperature of 16.6℃, 292 frost-free days, annual precipitation of 1057 mm and annual sunshine hours of 1200 hours. Zhenyuan County covers an area of 1,890 square kilometers, with jurisdiction over 12 townships (towns), 110 administrative villages, 5 communities and 4 neighborhood committees. According to the seventh census, the permanent population of Zhenyuan County was 189,715 as of midnight on November 1, 2020.
On September 25, 2018, it was awarded the honorary title of "2018 E-commerce into Rural Comprehensive Demonstration County" by the Ministry of Commerce.
On April 24, 2019, the People's Government of Guizhou Province officially approved Zhenyuan County's withdrawal from the poverty-stricken county list. China's top 100 tourist counties and cities in 2019. In 2020, the GDP of Zhenyuan County reached 6.171 billion yuan, an increase of 3.1% year-on-year.
