Lhasa, also known as Luo Ji and Sunshine City, is the prefecture-level city and capital of Tibet Autonomous Region. It is an international tourist city in China with snowy plateau and ethnic characteristics approved by The State Council. It covers an area of 29,640 square kilometers. By the end of 2020, the city has jurisdiction over 3 districts and 5 counties with a permanent resident population of 867,891.

Lhasa is located in southwest China, the middle part of the Tibetan Plateau, the north side of the Himalayan Mountains, and the valley plain in the middle reaches of the Lhasa River, a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River. Its geographical coordinates are 91°06 'east longitude and 29°36' north latitude. Lhasa River flows through this area and pours into Brahmaputra River in the southern suburbs. It is the political, economic, cultural, scientific and educational center of Tibet, as well as the holy land of Tibetan Buddhism. 3650 meters above sea level, sunny weather all year round. The sunshine time of the year is more than 3000 hours, known as the "sunshine city" reputation. Lhasa is one of the first national historical and cultural cities. Lhasa is famous for its beautiful scenery, long history, unique customs and people, and strong religious flavor. In the 7th century, Songtsen Gampo unified Tibet and moved the political center from Shannan to Lhasa. It has been awarded the honorary titles of "Excellent Tourist City of China", "Favorite Tourist City of European Tourists", "National Civilized City", "Most Safe City of China", "Top 200 Charming Cities with Chinese Characteristics", "Top 200 Charming Cities with World Characteristics", and "100 Cities in China" in 2018. In 2017, Lhasa was reexamined and confirmed to retain the honorary title of National Civilized City. On April 2, 2018, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission released a list of 17 Chinese cities to support a new batch of cities in building innovative cities. Lhasa was among them. In November 2018, it was listed in the top 100 of China's Comprehensive Well-off Urban Index. In October 2020, it was rated as the national model city (county) of double support.

In 2021, Lhasa's GDP reached 74.184 billion yuan, an increase of 6.7% over 2020.
