Turpan, a prefecture-level city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the central part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is an olive-shaped intermountain basin in the east of Tianshan Mountains, surrounded by mountains on all sides, and belongs to a typical continental warm temperate desert climate; It has jurisdiction over 1 district and 2 counties, with a total area of 69713 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh population census, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the permanent resident population of Turpan was 693988.

Located in the hinterland of the Eurasian continent, Turpan is the gateway of Urumqi and an important transportation hub of the New Silk Road and the Eurasian Continental Bridge. Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway and Nanjiang Railway meet here, forming a three-dimensional transportation system integrating "highway, railway and aviation" with Turpan Airport and G30 Line. It has the location and convenient transportation advantages of "connecting the north and south, connecting the east with the west, and coming from the west to the east", realizing the economic integration of Urumqi and Turkmenistan. The first, second and third lines of the west-to-east gas transmission, the Asia-Europe optical cable, the second optical cable out of Xinjiang, and the 750 kV transmission and transformation lines of the west-to-east power transmission run across the whole territory. In October 2017, it was awarded the National Garden City.
