Yulin, known as Yulin Prefecture in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Yulin is located in the southeast of Guangxi, adjacent to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the east, Beibu Gulf in the south, Southwest China in the back, and Southeast Asia. It is an important channel and key node city connecting the east and west, connecting the Guangdong-Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area and Beibu Gulf Economic zone. It is located in the joint part of South China Economic Circle and the Greater Southwest Economic Circle. It is surrounded by mountains, high in the middle, and slopes north and south; It is a subtropical monsoon climate zone, with significant seasonal changes. The climate is warm and hot, the temperature is higher and the heat is sufficient. The city has a total of 12,800 square kilometers; It has jurisdiction over 2 municipal districts, 1 city and 4 counties. As of midnight on November 1, 2020, according to the seventh census data, Yulin's permanent population is 5,796,766.

Yulin is the second most populous city in Guangxi, with more than 2.2 million overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It is the largest and famous hometown of overseas Chinese in Guangxi. Yulin is a national pilot city for reform and development, a national pilot zone for rural reform, and one of the nine national pilot zones for agricultural cooperation across the Taiwan Straits. It is also an important node city of Beibu Gulf City Group, an important node city of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, a member city of Pearl River - Xijiang Economic Belt, and a pilot zone for the integrated development of "Two Gulf" industries in Guangxi (Yulin).

Yulin is one of the country's second batch of rural reform pilot zones. Nanning to Guangzhou expressway, Yulin to Beihai Tieshan Port expressway, Lizhan-Zhan railway, Luo-Zhan-Zhan railway, Yutie railway intersect in Yulin; Yulin is rich in tourism resources, scenic spots such as Yuntian Folk Culture City, Darong Mountain National Forest Park, Xeru Mountain, Duqiao Mountain, etc. In March 2018, Yulin was nominated as a national Civilized City by the Central Civilization Office from 2018 to 2020.
In July 2019, it was named a national intellectual property pilot city.
In 2021, Yulin's GDP reached 207.061 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 9.9% based on comparable prices.
