Tibet Autonomous Region, or "Tibet" for short, with Lhasa as its capital, is located in the southwest of the People's Republic of China and is one of the five ethnic minority autonomous regions in China. Tibet is located in the southwest of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, between 26°50 'and 36°53' north latitude and 78°25 'and 99°06' east longitude. With an average altitude of over 4,000 meters, Tibet is known as the "Roof of the world". It covers an area of 1.2028 million square kilometers, accounting for about 1/8 of the total area of China and second only to Xinjiang among all provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. In 2021, Tibet had a permanent population of 3.66 million.

Tibet borders Xinjiang to the north, Sichuan to the east, Qinghai to the northeast, and Yunnan to the southeast. Bordering on Myanmar, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Kashmir and other countries and regions, with a land boundary of over 4,000 kilometers, it is an important gateway to China's southwest frontier.
Tibet is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. Since the Yuan Dynasty, the central government has exercised effective jurisdiction over Tibet. Tibetan people are an important member of the big family of the Chinese nation. The Tang and Song Dynasties in Tibet were called "Tubo", the Yuan and Ming Dynasties were called "Wuszang", and the Qing Dynasty was called "Tanggute" and "Tubert". It has been called "Tibet" since the reign of Kangxi of Qing Dynasty. On May 23, 1951, Tibet was peacefully liberated.

After the Tibetan rebellion was quelled in 1959, the central government began to exercise full and direct jurisdiction over Tibet. On September 9, 1965, the Tibet Autonomous Region was formally established. By December 23, 2019, Tibet had basically eliminated absolute poverty and lifted the whole region out of poverty.
