Nali area is the only area in the Tibet Autonomous Region. It was called Yangtong around AD, Nali in the Yuan Dynasty and Erisi in the Ming Dynasty. It is located in the southwest border of China, the western part of Tibet Autonomous Region and the northern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (Qiangtang Plateau). It borders Hotan Prefecture and Bayingoleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the north, Naqu City in the east, Shigatse City in the southeast, and Nepal, India and Kashmir in the southwest and west. With an area of 337,17 square kilometers, Ngari is the second largest prefecture-level unit in Tibet, second only to Nagqu City.

On December 9, 2019, the People's Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region approved the withdrawal of Cuoqin, Geze and Geji counties from the poverty-stricken counties (districts) in Ngari.
