Shannan region (Shannan region) generally refers to Shannan (prefecture-level city of Tibet Autonomous Region)
Shannan is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. It is located in the south of Gangdisi Mountain and Nianqing Tanggula Mountain, and in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. It borders Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, on the north, Shigaze on the west, Nyingchi on the east, and India and Bhutan on the south. It is located between 90°14" to 94°22" east longitude and 27°08" to 29°47" north latitude. It is one of the birthplaces of the ancient civilization of Tibet. Shannan, with a border of more than 600 kilometers long, has a very important strategic position and is the southwest border of China. It covers an area of 79,09 square kilometers. According to the seventh census, as of midnight on November 1, 2020, the permanent population of Shannan was 354,035.
In February 2016, The State Council approved to the Tibet Autonomous Region the abolition of Shannan District and Neidong County and the establishment of Shannan City at the prefecture level, with Neidong District as the government headquarters. By 2020, Shannan has jurisdiction over 1 municipal district and 11 counties.
On October 9, 2020, it was awarded the fourth batch of national ecological civilization Construction demonstration City and county title by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. In 2020, the GDP of Shannan reached 21.54 billion yuan, an increase of 7.9%, ranking second with Linzhi in terms of growth rate.
