Yan 'an City, referred to as "Yan" for short, is a prefecture-level city and provincial sub-central city of Shanxi Province. It is located in the northern part of Shanxi Province, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and the south-central region of the Loess Plateau, 371 kilometers north of the provincial capital Xi 'an. It is connected to Yulin in the north, Xianyang, Tongchuan and Weinan in Guanzhong in the south, across the Yellow River to Linfen and Luliang in Shanxi in the east, and Qingyang in Gansu in the west, with a total area of 37,000 square kilometers. As of 2019, Yan 'an has jurisdiction over 2 municipal districts, 10 counties and 1 county-level city.

Yan 'an, known as Fushi and Yanzhou in ancient times, is an important birthplace of the Chinese nation. The first ancestor of humanity, the Yellow Emperor, once lived in this area. It is the first mausoleum in the world -- the tomb of the first ancestor of the Chinese nation, the tomb of the Yellow Emperor: the location of the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, the sacred land of the nation, the holy land of the Chinese revolution, and the first national historical and cultural city announced by The State Council. In October 1935, the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Red Army successfully arrived at Wuqi Town. Yan 'an became the landing point and starting point of the Chinese revolution. It is the city with the largest preservation scale, the largest number and the most complete layout among the cities in the revolutionary base areas. Yan 'an is the birthplace of the "Double Support Movement", an excellent tourist city in China, and has the reputation of "Museum City of Chinese Revolution". There are 8,545 cultural relics sites, including 445 revolutionary sites.

By the end of 2021, Yan 'an has a permanent resident population of 2,269,300. In 2021, the regional GDP of Yan 'an reached 200,458 billion yuan, in which the added value of the primary industry was 20.915 billion yuan, that of the secondary industry was 122,977 billion yuan, that of the tertiary industry was 56.565 billion yuan, and the composition of the three industries was 10.4:61.4:28.2. The per capita GDP was 88,127 yuan.
