Hunan Province, referred to as "Xiang" for short, is a provincial-level administrative region of the People's Republic of China. Its capital city is Changsha, bounded between latitude 24°38 '~ 30°08' north, longitude 108°47 '~ 114°15' east, bordered by Jiangxi in the east, Chongqing and Guizhou in the west, Guangdong and Guangxi in the south, and Hubei in the north, with a total area of 21,800 square kilometers.

Hunan is located in the transition zone from Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to Jiangnan Hills and from Nanling Mountains to Jianghan plain. The terrain is horseshoe-shaped landform surrounded by mountains on three sides and opening to the north. It is composed of plains, basins, hills, mountains, rivers and lakes, straddling the Yangtze River and Pearl River systems, with a subtropical monsoon climate.

As of May 2021, Hunan Province has jurisdiction over 14 prefecture-level administrative regions, including 13 prefecture-level cities and 1 autonomous prefecture. There are 36 municipal districts, 19 county-level cities, 60 counties, and 7 autonomous counties, totaling 122 county-level divisions. There are 403 subdistricts, 1138 towns, 309 townships and 83 ethnic townships, totaling 1,933 township divisions.

By 2021, Hunan's permanent population was 66.22 million, 224,900 fewer than the previous year.
