Shanxi, referred to as "Jin", is a provincial-level administrative region of the People's Republic of China, with Taiyuan as its capital. It is located in North China, bordering Hebei in the east, Shaanxi in the west, Henan in the south, and Inner Mongolia in the north, between latitude 34°34 '-- 40°44' north, longitude 110°14 '-- 114°33' east, with a total area of 156,700 square kilometers.

The terrain of Shanxi Province is a parallelogram oblique from northeast to southwest. It is a typical loess covered mountain plateau, high in northeast and low in southwest. The interior of the plateau is undulating, with valleys criss-crossing. The landform includes mountains, hills, platforms and plains. The mountainous area accounts for 80.1% of the total area. Shanxi Province straddles the Yellow River system and the Haihe River system, and the river system is self-generated outflow type. Shanxi Province is located in the middle latitudes of the inland, a temperate continental monsoon climate.

As of April 2020, Shanxi Province has jurisdiction over 11 prefecture-level cities, 26 municipal districts, 11 county-level cities and 80 counties], achieving a gross regional product (GDP) of 170.2668 billion yuan, of which the added value of the primary industry is 82.472 billion yuan, and that of the secondary industry is 745.309 billion yuan. The added value of the tertiary industry was 874.887 billion yuan, and the per capita GDP was 45,724 yuan.

As of 2021, Shanxi has a permanent population of 34.8048 million.
