Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, referred to as "New" for short, is located in the northwest of China and is one of the five ethnic minority autonomous regions in China. With an area of 1.6649 million square kilometers, it is the largest provincial administrative region in China's land area, accounting for about one-sixth of China's total land area. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the permanent population of the autonomous region will be 25.89 million in 2021.

Xinjiang is located in the hinterland of the Asia-Europe continent, with a land border of more than 5600 kilometers, bordering Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, India and Afghanistan. It has been an important passage of the ancient Silk Road in history, and is now the necessary place for the second "Asia-Europe continental bridge". Its strategic position is very important. There are 56 ethnic groups in Xinjiang, mainly including Han, Uygur, Kazak, Hui, Mongol, Kirgiz, Sibe, Tajik, Uzbek, Manchu, Daur, Tatar, Russian and other ethnic groups. It is one of the five ethnic autonomous regions in China. In the results of the sixth national population census, Xinjiang ranks fifth in the proportion of the population with higher education in 24 provinces and cities. Xinjiang will fully implement the 14-year free education policy in southern Xinjiang, promote the 14-year free education in other regions, and gradually realize the 15-year free education in the whole region, namely, three years of pre-school, six years of primary school, three years of junior high school and three years of senior high school.

Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China's territory. In 60 BC, the central government of the Western Han Dynasty set up the Western Regions Capital Protector. In 1884, the Qing government established a province in Xinjiang. Xinjiang was peacefully liberated in 1949. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was officially established on October 1, 1955. As of January 2023, Xinjiang now has jurisdiction over 4 prefecture-level cities, 5 regions, 5 autonomous prefectures, and 12 county-level cities directly under the Central Government.
