The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, referred to as "Inner Mongolia", has Hohhot as its capital. Located in the north of China, it is geographically located between 37°24 '-53°23' north latitude and 97°12 '-126°04' east longitude. It is bounded by Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and Hebei in the northeast, adjacent to Shanxi, Shaanxi and Ningxia in the south, adjacent to Gansu in the southwest, bordering Russia and Mongolia in the north, across Northeast China, North China and Northwest China.

The terrain of Inner Mongolia extends from northeast to southwest in a narrow and long shape. The region is basically a plateau-like geomorphic region, covering plateaus, mountains, hills, plains, deserts, rivers, lakes and other landforms. The region has a temperate continental climate and straddles four major water systems: the Yellow River, the Erguna River, the Nenjiang River and the Xiliao River.

By the end of 2019, Inner Mongolia, with a total area of 1.183 million square kilometers, had jurisdiction over 12 prefecture-level administrative regions, including 9 prefecture-level cities and 3 confederations, with 23 municipal districts, 11 county-level cities, 17 counties, 49 flags and 3 autonomous flags. By the end of 2021, Inner Mongolia's permanent population was 24.0 million, down 28,000 from the previous year. In 2021, the GDP of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region reached 2,051.42 billion yuan, an increase of 6.3 percent over the previous year based on comparable prices.
